The challenge

A trusted local name that search engines barely knew

Offline, Victoria Roofing had everything a homeowner looks for: more than 40 years of trading, a real Camden address, round-the-clock emergency cover and hundreds of five-star Google reviews. Online, very little of that reached Google. Few searches led to the website, and the site did not have a page for most of the jobs and areas the business actually covers.

Search was also changing. More homeowners now ask Google questions directly, use voice search, or ask tools such as ChatGPT and Gemini to recommend a roofer. A site built only for classic rankings would miss those customers.

The brief had three goals:

  1. Win local searches. Rank for high-intent roofing searches in Camden and North London, where the jobs are.
  2. Be the answer. Appear in featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice results when homeowners ask roofing questions.
  3. Be recommended by AI. Give AI assistants clear, consistent facts so they can name Victoria Roofing when asked for a trusted London roofer.

The main constraint was authority. The domain is small, with a Domain Authority of 9 and 35 referring domains, so growth had to come from relevance, structure and local trust signals rather than buying links.

Our approach

Three layers of search, one strategy

We treated SEO, AEO and GEO as one piece of work. The same pages, written once, serve Google’s rankings, its answer boxes and the AI tools that summarise the web.

Gazelle Agency's three-layer approach for Victoria Roofing: SEO service and area pages, AEO answer-first FAQs, and GEO consistent business identity
Layer 1 · SEO

Building a local search footprint

We rebuilt the site around one simple rule: every search a customer might make should land on a page written for that search.

Dedicated service pages

We created ten service pages, each focused on one job and on London: roof repair, flat roof repair, new roof installation, guttering, chimney repair, skylight installation, skylight repair, fascias and soffits, storm damage repair and conservatory roofs. Each page names the materials and problems people actually search for, such as felt, EPDM and GRP flat roofs, slipped tiles, misted skylights and lead flashing.

Location pages for every area served

We built thirteen North London area pages, linked from the main menu: Camden, Camden Town, Kentish Town, Belsize Park, Highgate, Hampstead, Tufnell Park, Holloway, Islington, Archway, Kilburn, West Hampstead and Primrose Hill. We added outer-London pages such as Edgware, St Albans and Brentwood to reach jobs further out.

On-page and technical basics

  • Keyword-led page titles and meta descriptions, such as “Roofing Contractors in London”.
  • One clear H1 per page and a logical heading structure.
  • Internal links from the homepage to every service and area page, so Google finds and values them.
  • Click-to-call and WhatsApp links on every page, plus “Free quote” buttons above the fold.

Local trust signals

The full business name, Camden address and phone number sit in the footer of every page and match the Google Business Profile. The homepage shows the 5.0 rating from 338 Google reviews, the founding year and 24/7 emergency cover, so visitors and Google see the same proof.

Layer 2 · AEO

Answering homeowners’ questions directly

Answer engine optimisation means writing so that Google, voice assistants and AI tools can take a clear answer straight from the page. Before they call a roofer, homeowners ask the same handful of questions, so we answered them on the site.

  • FAQ blocks. The homepage answers six buying questions in two or three sentences each: the cost of roof repair in London, whether quotes are free, emergency availability, areas covered, guarantees and how to get started.
  • Answer-first writing. Each answer opens with the direct reply, then gives the detail. This is the format featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes favour.
  • Honest pricing answers. The cost answer gives a realistic range, from a few hundred pounds for a tile to thousands for larger repairs, instead of avoiding the question. That keeps the page useful for “how much” searches.
  • Plain, quotable facts. Key claims are written as short standalone lines: family-run since 1982, 5.0 from 338 Google reviews, open 24 hours, fully guaranteed workmanship.
Layer 3 · GEO

Making the brand easy for AI to recommend

Generative engine optimisation is about being the business that ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews name when someone asks for a recommendation. These tools favour businesses they can verify across several sources, so we focused on a consistent, well-evidenced identity.

  • One consistent identity. The same name, address, phone number and email appear on the website, the Google Business Profile and the Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest profiles.
  • Review-led proof. 338 five-star Google reviews give AI tools independent evidence of quality, and the site repeats the rating in plain text they can read.
  • A clear specialism and area. Every page ties the brand to roofing and to London or a named North London area, so AI models link the business to the right local questions.
  • Natural, conversational copy. The site uses the words people type into AI tools, such as “roof leaking at 2am?” and “which areas do you cover?”, which helps it match conversational prompts.

Lessons

What this means for other trade businesses

  1. A page per job and per area beats one general page. Most of Victoria Roofing’s new rankings come from specific service and location pages, not the homepage.
  2. Reviews do double work. The same five-star reviews that win customers also give Google and AI tools the proof they need to trust and recommend a business.
  3. Answer the questions customers already ask. Clear, honest answers about price, coverage and emergencies help with rankings, featured snippets and AI answers at the same time.
  4. Small domains can still grow. With a Domain Authority of 9, Victoria Roofing grew through structure and relevance first. Authority building now multiplies those gains.
What’s next

Turning page-two rankings into page-one leads

  • Push near-miss keywords onto page one. Strengthen the skylight, Edgware and St Albans pages, which already rank between #24 and #33.
  • Build local authority. Grow beyond 35 referring domains with local citations, trade directories and Camden community links.
  • Track AI visibility. Measure how often ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews name Victoria Roofing for London roofing questions, and report it monthly.
  • Expand answer content. Add FAQs to every service and area page, plus guides on roofing costs, materials and repair-or-replace decisions.
  • Smooth out seasonality. Publish storm-damage and winter-preparation content before autumn, so traffic holds after the spring peak.

Questions about this case study

How long does SEO take for a roofing company?

Most local trade businesses see early ranking movement within three to six months, with stronger results over a year. In this case, organic visits grew steadily from October 2025 and peaked in March 2026, about five months later.

What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?

SEO helps your website rank in Google’s normal results. AEO structures your content so Google and voice assistants can show it as a direct answer. GEO helps AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Gemini understand your business and recommend it accurately.

Can a small local business compete with big directories and national firms?

Yes, for local searches. Victoria Roofing has a Domain Authority of just 9, yet it ranks #2 on Google UK for its core terms by having focused service and area pages, consistent business details and strong reviews.

Do you guarantee rankings?

No. No honest agency can guarantee rankings, because Google decides them. We guarantee clear work, plain-English reporting and a strategy built on what has worked for clients like Victoria Roofing.

Do you work with trades outside London?

Yes. We work with roofers, plumbers, builders and other trades across the UK and internationally. The same approach works for any business that serves a defined local area.
